France planned to introduce a social media ban for the children aged under 15 years after a fatal stabbing attack in the school.
According to Independent, following a recent deadly stabbing at a school in eastern France, President Emmanuel Macron announced that he will push for European Union-wide regulation to ban social media for under-15s.
In an interview on Tuesday, he expressed his concerns about the security of the children and urgency to implement the ban in the next few months.
France ‘cannot wait’ to implement a social media ban:
Hours after a 14-year-old student was questioned by police over the fatal knifing of a 31-year-old aide at a middle school in Nogent, Haute-Marne, he told public broadcaster France 2, “If that does not work, we will start to do it in France. We cannot wait.”
After the interview he wrote on X that the regulation will be backed by experts, adding, “Platforms have the ability to verify age. Do it.”
He also stressed that social media is one of the factors that need to be blamed for the violence among young people.
It is worth noting that France will not be the first country to impose such a ban, as several countries around the world have begun taking measures to control the increasing social media usage among children.
Last year, Australia pioneered a landmark move by approving one of the world's toughest social media bans, banning the platform for under-16s.
