More young adults and teenagers are leaning on artificial intelligence to navigate everyday social interactions and personal conversations, choosing digital chatbots over real-world dialogue. Recent national studies show that about 20% of young people turn to AI companions for relationship advice and emotional support.
A new way to talk
Young people are increasingly using AI tools to draft tricky text messages, practice awkward conversations and process social situations. Research highlights that many youth view these digital assistants as a low-stress shortcut to managing complex human interactions.
Safe and non-judgmental
Many teenagers prefer interacting with artificial intelligence because it is available at any hour and removes the immediate fear of rejection. Clinical psychologist Joshua Goodman noted that conversations with AI chatbots can feel like “a safe space to discuss or process things that otherwise wouldn’t feel safe to talk about with their parents or other people in their life.”
The hidden risks
Despite the convenience, experts warn that digital companions cannot replace true human empathy. Clinical psychologist Mary Alvord cautioned that “perceived safety isn’t the same as real safety,” reminding users that chatbot conversations are stored and analyzed.
Media psychologist Don Grant added that chatbots “cannot have any confrontational or challenging response,” which can stunt real-world social growth.
Keeping human connections
To prevent young adults from replacing real friendships with algorithms, health professionals recommend setting clear boundaries. Practicing real-life conversations remains essential for building confidence and lasting emotional bonds.
