The European Union is reportedly preparing to classify ChatGPT and Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) under its Digital Services Act (DSA).

A report suggested the designation could be announced in August, placing both services under a similar regulatory framework as multiple platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter).

Under the DSA, online platforms with over 45 million monthly users in the European Union are classified as VLOPs and must comply with stricter transparency and safety requirements.

New obligations for ChatGPT and Roblox

Once officially designated, ChatGPT and Roblox will have four months to meet the EU's requirements.

The companies will be required to establish contact points for users and authorities, publish clear and available terms of service, offering enhanced transparency regarding their advertising, recommendation systems and content moderation decisions.

Moreover, they will be expected to report suspected criminal activity when necessary.

The platforms are required to assess risks about the illegal content on a regular basis, discrimination, gender-based violence, media freedom and freedom of expression.

The DSA also requires VLOPs to maintain internal compliance systems and undergo annual independent audits. Companies must share certain data with the European Commission and provide approved researchers with access for oversight and analysis.
