Anthropic has officially confirmed the development of an in-house team to design custom AI chips for its Claude family of artificial intelligence models, marking a major leap forward to adopt the cutting-edge technology in today’s era that will also help in minimizing reliance on third-party hardware.
Company hiring engineers for custom silicon team
The AI startup announced that it is currently recruiting engineers with expertise across hardware and software to join a dedicated custom silicon team.
As per the Chinese tech manufacturer, the team will help in co-designing AI-powered chips and Claude models to enhance performance, raise efficiency, and fulfill the growing demand of computing of all the enterprise customers.
The confirmation comes after earlier reports that Anthropic was exploring custom chip development.
Job listings suggest the company is currency looking for some engineers, having a vast experience in consuming semiconductor designs from concept to production.
Anthropic stated its custom silicon initiative is part of a broader multi-chip strategy instead of a complete shift away from existing hardware collaborators.
Anthropic added that it will persist to use a diversified infrastructure, including technology provided by Amazon Web Services.
Similar to other AI-powered companies, Anthropic is seeking its reliance on Nvidia, whose GPUs currently dominate the AI accelerator market.
Growing trend in AI hardware development
Anthropic joins a growing list of AI firms investing in custom silicon. OpenAI recently launched its AI chip project, while Meta is developing next-generation AI processors.
Further reports suggested that Mistral AI is exploring similar plans.
Anthropic has yet to officially disclose the timeline to release its custom chips or whether it will manufacture them independently.
Industry estimates suggest that designing the cutting-edge AI processors can cost hundreds of millions of dollars, making chip development one of the most expensive and technically demanding areas in artificial intelligence.
