Dwayne Johnson’s wife Lauren Hashian has lifted the lid on their early romance, revealing their date nights were far from lavish and often involved karaoke sessions at home because, as she put it, “he’s very musical.”
“Dwayne is very musical,” said Hashian, 41, of her husband of almost seven years.
She added, “I think growing up in a Polynesian household, you’re always singing. And his mother’s always playing ukulele. She carries a ukulele with her everywhere she goes.”
“Everywhere,” the Jumanji star jumped in a conversation with a smile.
Johnson’s mother Ata hails from Samoa, with the mother-son duo sharing a love of traditional Samoan dances they have performed together in Hawaii.
“He grew up with music all around and he’s a really great singer,” Hashian continued.
She went on to share, “When we were first dating, we had a karaoke machine in our house. We’d have a date — I’d even make a drink and we’d sing karaoke for fun!”
His growing fame made ordinary outings difficult, she recalled with a laugh, saying, “we couldn’t go to the mall.”
According to Hashian, the Moana franchise has “finally” given Johnson the opportunity to display his musical talents through his role as Maui and “You’re Welcome.”
Hashian said Johnson’s new song for Disney’s Moana: Voices Across the Ocean was the “next step,” with the couple collaborating with Moana choreographers on music inspired by Pacific artists.
The actor collaborated with American Idol winner Iam Tongi to create Your Dad, drawing inspiration from his daughters with Hashian and ex-wife Dany Garcia.
The heartfelt ballad showed “the more sensitive side of him as a girl dad. And he’s the best girl dad,” Hashian stated
“It really is him. It’s his whole heart,” she added.
Hashian said Johnson’s musical side has always been there, dating back to their karaoke nights, so little encouragement was needed.
