A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit near Lebanon, New Jersey, on Friday, April 5.
The tremor was felt throughout the New York City metro area, as well as from Philadelphia to Boston, as per the BBC.
The earthquake occurred at 10:23 a.m. Eastern Time, approximately 4 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, according to data from several news agencies.
In New York, the Statue of Liberty was observed swaying during the initial earthquake, while workers and residents in all five boroughs of the city reported strong shaking.
As reported by BBC, residents and the United States Geological Survey reported at least six aftershocks, with one measuring 4.0 magnitude felt around 6:00 p.m. local time.
Residents described experiencing a strong shaking sensation that caused objects to be thrown around their homes and walls to be damaged.
One of the New York resident told the BBC's US partner CBS News, “I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out”.
Another New Yorker, Charita Walcott, said the quake felt "like a violent rumble that lasted about 30 seconds or so".
Despite this, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul stated that there were no reports of significant damage or injuries.
She cautioned about potential aftershocks but assured that they are typical and not anticipated to result in additional harm.
