The United Nations International Day of Living Together in Peace is annually observed across the globe on May 16.

The objective of this day is to promote unity and cooperation despite differences and diversity.

This day encourages people to build a sustainable world filled with peace.

The first International Day of Living with Peace was observed on May 16, 2018.

Global Conflicts and International Day of Living with Peace

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, earlier this year in February in New York, said in today's world, building peace is the greatest responsibility of humanity.

He noted, “As conflicts rage and geopolitical divisions grow, peace in our world is threatened…Around the globe and across a range of issues, peace is the missing piece...Terrible conflicts that are killing and maiming civilians in record numbers.”

Guterres highlighted, “The situation in Gaza is a festering wound on our collective conscience that threatens the entire region. Nothing justifies the horrific terror attacks launched by Hamas against Israel on 7 October. Nor is there any justification for the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”

The Secretary General in the same meeting called for peace in Ukraine, Sahel, Sudan, Libya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Yemen, Myanmar, Haiti, and Western Balkans.

Guterres emphasised, “We need to strengthen and renew global peace and security frameworks to deal with the complexities of today’s multipolar world.”
