A.R. Rahman has unconventional methods for making music

Irshad Kamil was held captive by A.R. Rahman one night for creating the song Tu Kya Jaane from their fresh hit, Amar Singh Chamkila.

Speaking to News18, he first informed that the track is a replacement for another melody that had to be disposed because it didn’t band together with the sequence in particular.

“We had finalized a different song. But after some deliberations, we was felt that it wasn’t appropriate for the scene in question. It was then that Rahman composed Tu Kya Jaane,” the writer said.

Going on to mention his ‘prisoner moment,’ Irshad divulged, “I had gone to meet him for a different reason, and it was well past midnight. He told me to wait. He said, ‘I won’t let you leave before you give me a line or two for the new song!’ ”

But since it was past 2 am already, he excused himself, saying, “Dimaagh nahin chal raha,” to which Rahman’s response was still, “I’m not listening to you. You sit here and give me just one line.”

Cut to seven minutes later, the poet didn’t just come up with a single line, he handed the entire set of lyrics for Tu Kya Jaane to his captor.

This was not however the only time that Irshad was probed for inking something down within moments.

One New Year’s Eve, Rahman called him around 11 PM, demanding a quick number. Irshad then stepped away from watching a special program with his family and penned Maahi Ve for Highway in just about 15 minutes.

It’s his decades worth of experience and love for music that makes the job easier.
