Spanish footballer Nico Williams was racially abused during a La Liga match against hosts Atletico Madrid, on Saturday, April 27.

According to Sky News, an Athletic Bilbao player was targeted with racist chants during the first half of the game when he took a corner kick.

After the match, Williams, told DANZ, "I have gone to take a corner, and I have heard monkey sounds. There are stupid people everywhere but nothing happens, we have to keep working.”

The winger added, “I hope this changes little by little because, in the end, we are fighting internally and externally against this."

William tried to get the referee to stop play after he was racially abused during the match.

Meanwhile, the Atletico players Jose Maria Gimenez and Antoine Griezmann urged the home fans to stop chanting.

Later, when the winger levelled the scores level before halftime with his goal, he ran in front of the stand and tapped on his arm in reference to his skin colour.

He said about his goal celebration, “It comes with a bit of anger; it is not normal that they still insult you because of your skin tone."

Moreover, Atletico Madrid captain, Koke Resurreccion, after winning the match with 3-1 condemn the racial abused with his rival, saying, “These things shouldn't happen in soccer."

La Liga, in a statement, said, “There's no place for racist or hateful behaviour in sport. La Liga vehemently condemns any racist acts and will continue working to eradicate this inexcusable behaviour from our sport."
