Switzerland’s singer Nemo won the 68th Eurovision Grand Final with the song ‘The Code.”
According to CNN, Nemo has become the first non-binary to win the competition since Celine Dion won in 1988.
Nemo won over the crowd with a stunning genre-bending anthem, ‘The Code,’ about their journey towards accepting their non-binary identity.
Before winning the finals, the Swiss singer told CNN, “Eurovision was even bigger and crazier than I expected it to be. There’s so much depth to Eurovision that I didn’t know of before. If I win, I will throw a big party on the lake of my hometown, Biel.”
After accepting the Eurovision trophy, Nemo expressed, “I hope this contest can live up to its promise and continue to stand for peace and dignity for every person.”
Nemo further added, “I have to say this whole experience was really intense and not just pleasant all the way. There were a lot of things that didn’t seem like it was all about love and unity, and that made me really sad.”
Talking about the song, they said, "To know that a song where I speak about my story has touched so many people, and maybe inspired other people to stay true to their stories, is the most insane thing that has ever happened to me."
Additionally, the event was overshadowed by the protests against Israel's war in Gaza.
The protestors said that the event was ‘artwashing’ Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, which has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians since October 7, 2023.
Protestors outside the arena chanted, “Free, free Palestine!” And “Boycott the Eurovision.”
However, the organisers of the European Broadcasting Unit (EBU) defended the presence of Israeli singer Eden Golan in the contest and insisted that the event was non-political.
