Roger Corman, pioneer of independent production passes away on May 9

Roger Corman who garnered many titles, including The Pope of Pop Cinema, The Spiritual Godfather of the New Hollywood, and The King of Cult, passed away at the age of 98.

As per Variety, Corman took his last breath on Thursday, May 9, at his residence in Santa Monica, California, with family members by his side.

“His films were revolutionary and iconoclastic, and captured the spirit of an age. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that,'” the family said in a statement.

Corman is renowned for his extensive work in producing and directing low-budget films.

In addition to that, he is credited for discovering several notable figures in the film industry, such as Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese, and Robert De Niro.

Legendary B-movie King specialised in genres including horror, science fiction, action and even some family fare.

Between 1954 and 2008, Corman directed 55 films and produced around 385, according to IMDb.

His famous works include Little Shop of Horrors, Atlas, The Raven, The Fast and the Furious, Machine Gun Kelly, The Intruder, and several others.

Corman is survived by his wife, producer Julia Corman, and their two children, Catherine and Mary.
