Brazil has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 Women's World Cup, triumphing over a joint bid by Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany (BNG).
As per BBC, this marks the first time a South American country will host the prestigious tournament.
In a historic decision, member associations voted 119 to 78 in favour of Brazil during FIFA's congress in Bangkok on Friday, May 17.
After the announcement, FIFA president Gianni Infantino remarked, "Congratulations to Brazil."
He further added, "We will have the best World Cup in Brazil. Many thanks as well to the BNG bid, who have been fantastic."
The BNG bid, while commendable, was surpassed by Brazil in technical aspects such as stadiums, accommodation, and transportation, according to FIFA's evaluation report.
While, the United States and Mexico withdrew their joint bid in April, saying they would focus on bidding for the tournament in 2031, while South Africa did the same in November.
President of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodrigues said, "We knew we would be celebrating a victory for South American women's soccer and for women. You can be sure, with no vanity, we will accomplish the best World Cup for women."
Moreover, Brazil hosted the men’s World Cup in 1950 and 2014.
However, the 2027 Women's World Cup will adopt the same 32-team format as the 2023 edition, held in Australia and New Zealand, where Spain emerged as champions.
