US President Joe Biden endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for president soon after withdrawing from the race on Sunday, July 22.

According to CNN, Biden, who announced his withdrawal from re-election with Donald Trump in a letter posted on his official social media account later, backed Vice President Harris and urged his party to unite behind her.

Biden wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my vice president." And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.”

Harris, in response to the 81-year-old president’s support, said in a statement, “She was honored to have the president’s endorsement, and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”

Kamala Harris takes over the Biden-Harris campaign account

After Sunday’s announcement, the Biden-Harris campaign formally amended the Federal Election Commission filing to rename the committee, declaring Harris as a candidate for president.

In a letter to the commission, the campaign principle committee asserted, “Vice President Harris is now a candidate for United States President in the 2024 election and will henceforth be conducting campaign activities only in pursuit of that office.”

Moreover, Trevor Potter, founder and president of Campaign Legal Center, stated, “Specifically, because Biden and Harris share a campaign committee, the Vice President and her running mate can continue using the campaign’s existing funds for the general election if she is on the Democratic ticket as either the presidential or vice presidential nominee.”
