The Republican and Democratic lawmakers called on US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign in the wake of former President Donald Trump's assassination attempt.

According to BBC, the lawmakers made a demand during the House Oversight Committee hearing on Monday, July 22. The committee asked Cheatle about the security preparations of her agency ahead of the July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, that left one dead and three wounded, including Trump.

Cheatle said the assassination attempt against the Republican nominee for president was ‘the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades.’

The secret service director also assured that she would 'move heaven and earth’ to assure that a similar event never happens again. She added, “Thinking about what we should have done differently is never far from my thoughts.”

Meanwhile, after the hearing, the Republican and Democrat from the committee, James Comer and Jamie Raskin, sent a letter to Ms. Cheatle that said, “In the middle of a presidential election, the Committee and the American people demand serious institutional accountability and transparency that you are not providing.”

It further added, “We call on you to resign as Director as a first step to allowing new leadership to swiftly address this crisis and rebuild the trust of a truly concerned Congress and the American people."
