Argentina vs Morocco: Fans storm field in chaotic Olympic opener

Morocco shocked Argentina with a 2-1 win in Paris Olympic soccer opener

Paris Olympic 2024 men’s soccer opener turn turned chaotic and violent after the Moroccan fans stormed on Wednesday, July 24.

According to Associated Press, the face-off between Argentina and Morocco remained suspended for nearly two hours after furious Morocco fans invaded the field and threw bottles from the stands at Argentinian players.

The chaos erupted after the two-time gold medalist Argentina scored a late goal in the 16th minute of the added time.

The match stopped after the violent reaction by the fans. The crowd was then told to leave the stadium while the players remained at the venue for the remaining three minutes of the match.

Moreover, after the unpleasant event, Argentina’s soccer federation said that it has issued a plea to the world governing body FIFA to ‘take the necessary regulatory measures for such a serious event.’

Argentina manager Javier Mascherano said, “I don't remember something like this happening at this level, that the match is suspended for an hour and a half, warming up for 10 minutes and then playing three. What happened on the pitch was a scandal, it's not a neighborhood tournament, it's the Olympics."

A spokesperson for Paris organizers asserted, “Paris 2024 is working with the relevant stakeholders to understand the causes and identify appropriate actions.”

Additionally, Morocco claimed a historic win 2-1 against Argentina in the Olympic soccer opener.
