Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi has apologized to his wife on Saturday, July 27, after losing his wedding ring during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.

The incident occurred while Tamberi was flag-waving alongside three-time Olympic medalist Arianna Errigo.

The ring fell off, bounced off the boat, and disappeared into the river.

The 32-year-old shared a series of pictures in a joint Instagram post, featuring his wife, Chiara Bontempi Tamberi, and his wedding ring, apologizing with the message, "I'm sorry my love, I'm so sorry." He blamed the incident on "losing too many kilos" and his "irrepressible enthusiasm."

"If it had to happen, if I had to lose this ring, I couldn't imagine a better place," he wrote, suggesting that the ring will now "remain forever in the riverbed of the city of love."

He humorously proposed throwing Chiara's ring in the river too, so they could be "together forever" and give them an excuse to renew their vows.

Tamberi described the moment as "a few moments that lasted forever."

Meanwhile, Chiara responded to his post, saying, "Only you could turn this into something romantic."

For the unversed, Tamberi and Chiara exchanged their vows in September 2022.
