Hamas leader's farewell procession draws huge crowd in Iran

Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Iran on Wednesday

Iran streets were overflowed with thousands of people gathered to bid farewell to the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on Thursday, August 1.

According to CNN, the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, led prayers for the Haniyeh at Tehran University.

After the prayers, the coffin of the Hamas chief and his bodyguard were moved for the procession from Tehran University towards Azadi Square, which is at a distance of about 6 km (3.7 miles).

Thousands of mourners gathered in the street to pay tribute to Hianyeh, who was assassinated along with his bodyguard at his residence in Tehran on Wednesday, July 31.

The Iranian and Hamas officials claimed that it was an Israeli airstrike that killed Haniyeh, whereas Israel has not yet taken responsibility for the attack.

Moreover, Iran’s supreme leader vowed to take revenge for Haniyeh’s assassination, saying, “You killed our dear guest in our house and now have paved the way for your harsh punishment. We consider it our duty to seek revenge for his blood, as he was martyred in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

To note, after the procession, it will be flown to Doha, Qatar, for burial.
