Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has set a 6-month deadline for the transition of power to a new government.

According to France24, Karki, after taking office on Sunday, September 14, following deadly protests in the country, said that she “did not wish” to be a prime minister and will hand over the power within six months.

The 73-year-old, in her first public comments, said, “I did not wish for this job. It was after voices from the streets that I was compelled to accept.”

“We have to work according to the thinking of the Gen Z generation. ... What this group is demanding is an end to corruption, good governance and economic equality. You and I have to be determined to fulfil that,” she added.

The former chief justice also “urged calm and cooperation to rebuild” the country after widespread violent protests that forced former Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli to resign.

The massive Gen Z protests in Nepal ignited by social media began on September 8, and during the two days, at least 72 people, including three police officers, died while politicians' homes were vandalised and parliament was set on fire.

After Oli’s resignation, Karki, who is known for her stance against corruption, was named as the new and first-ever female prime minister of Nepal on September 12.
