Apple has officially confirmed the iPhone 18 Pro Max launch timeline, which is scheduled on September 9, with leaked details suggesting the flagship could receive a major camera feature that may not be available on the smaller iPhone 18 Pro.
iPhone 18 Pro Max camera upgrade
The Cupertino-based tech giant has slated its fall keynote for 10 a.m. Pacific time at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino.
The highly anticipated Apple event is likely to bring two Pro models and the company's first foldable iPhone, while the basic iPhone 18 is reported to see a setback until Spring 2027.
As per Chinese leaker Ice Universe, the flagship model could be the only Pro variant, entailing the only Pro model to feature a variable aperture camera.
In terms of camera capabilities, Apple has never used a mechanical variable aperture on an iPhone, with the main camera maintaining a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture since the iPhone 14 Pro.
A variable aperture would enable users to control how much light reaches the camera sensor.
Moreover, it could also produce more natural optical background blur compared with Apple's software-based Portrait mode.
Camera capabilities
A report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggested the lighting behind the company’s logo in the event invitation could hint at a mechanical aperture.
The flagship pro models are also likely to bring significant upgrades such as a 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip, Apple's C2 modem and a slimmer Dynamic Island.
iPhone 18 Pro Max pricing and battery
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is likely to get an enlarged battery and longer optical zoom. Some reports suggest a battery capacity of around 5,600mAh.
Pricing of iPhone 18 Pro Max remains uncertain, although one estimate suggests the latest model is likely to be priced at $300 more than comparable iPhone 17 Pro models, partly due to rising memory costs.
It is pertinent to mention Apple has yet to officially confirm the pricing and above mentioned expected features of iPhone 18 models .
