Britney Spears' biopic is still being produced amid speculations!
Elizabeth "Liz" Meriwether, the screenwriter behind the upcoming biopic, said that the project is in its early stages.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Liz noted, "I'm really at the beginning of the process of thinking about it."
She added, "But I do feel like what she experienced was pretty unique for the moment that it was happening, almost a perfect storm of attention and new forms of media."
Britney Spears' sensational career
Britney Spears kicked off her sensational career in September 1998, with the release of her record-breaking hit ...Baby One More Time.
She followed the debut album success with the release of Oops!...I Did It Again, Britney In the Zone, Blackout and Circus.
Spears also made her movie debut in the 2002 film, Crossroads.
Amid her sky-rocketing music career, Spears' life became quite complicated, as she was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship in 2008, which remained in place for nearly 14 years before it was terminated in November 2021.
In 2023, she told her own story in her memoir titled The Woman in Me, which is set to serve as the source material for the upcoming biopic.
Universal Pictures announced in August 2024 that it had acquired the rights to the book, with Jon M. Chu set to direct the adaptation.
Britney Spears also confirmed at the time that she was working on the project with producer Marc Platt.
Liz said that she has read The Woman in Me and has listened to its audiobook, narrated by Michelle Williams, multiple times.
The 44-year-old revealed that Spears' story comes at a moment when there is a renewed interest in how women in the spotlight were treated, particularly during the 1990s and early 2000s.
"It's almost like the question at the beginning of the interview about the New Girl notes. You find yourself in these conversations and everything seems normal, and then you go back 10 years later and look at that conversation and the whole foundation of it was wrong," she explained to Vanity Fair.
Notably, the Britney Spears biopic does not yet have an official release date, and no details about the script or casting have been announced yet.
