World leaders gathered in New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly amid wars, and intensifying geopolitical issues and increasing concerns over artificial intelligence (AI) and climate change.
The UN General Assembly meeting included high-stake delegations, with greater diplomatic activity running through September 28.
1. Iran War and Strait of Hormuz
One of the majorly discussed issues was the ongoing US-Iran war, which has posed significant impact all over the world, causing widespread tensions since early 2026 that led to the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei and a substantial number of humans.
President Donald Trump defended US actions in his September 22 address and warned of further escalation without a peace agreement.
Meanwhile, Iran proposed a seven-day roadmap involving the vital waterway of Hormuz, which has reportedly been rejected by Trump.
2. Gaza and the Palestinian question
Another issue which remains at the centre of international discussions was regarding a major humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which deeply affected people’s hearts.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an end to the fighting, calling for the expansion of humanitarian access and ensuring civilian’s safety after a major destruction in Palestine, which claimed thousands of lives brutally.
Additionally, the UN has also continued to stress the importance of a two-state solution. Earlier this month, the General Assembly voted 152-3 to allow the Palestinian delegation to participate virtually in the high-level debate.
3. Russia-Ukraine war
The Russia-Ukraine conflict remains another major diplomatic challenge.
EU leaders used the assembly to call for an immediate ceasefire and a peace process that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
4. Artificial intelligence and global security
AI governance also emerged as a significant global issue. Guterres urged countries to establish stronger rules, as AI continues to grow at an uncontrollable pace.
Notably, European leaders also called for accountability and transparency in global AI governance.
The latest UNGA discussions demonstrates a world confronting interconnected security, economic, technological and climate challenges, while diplomatic efforts continue to find efficient solutions, aiming to promote peace.
