Daniil Medvedev has defeated longtime rival Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the Rolex Shanghai Masters quarterfinals.

According to ATP Tour, Medvedev claimed a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Tsitsipas on Wednesday, October 14, to qualify for the fourth quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters in the past five appearances.

There have been verbal flare-ups in previous meetings between Medvedev and Tsitsipas down the years, including in the Australian Open semifinals in 2022.

But the world No 5 delivered a stellar display to prevail 6-4, 7-5 against 43rd-ranked Tsitsipas in the fourth round at the Masters 1000 tournament on Wednesday.

Former world No 1 Medvedev now holds a 11-5 record against his long-time rival Tsitsipas, who is a former world No 3.

Medvedev said in his on-court interview, “I love Shanghai as a city. It is one of my favourite stops on Tour, so trying to stay as long as possible. I am playing great. Today was a different game style than on the Grandstand. But served great, zero break points to face, so I am very happy about it.”

With his 84-minute win, Medvedev became just the sixth man to reach the quarter-finals in Shanghai on at least four occasions.

Chasing his fourth title of the year and first at Masters 1000 level since 2023, Medvedev will next meet Tommy Paul or Zizou Bergs.

The lineup for the quarterfinals in the top half of the draw was set on Tuesday: it will be top-seeded Alexander Zverev vs. Alex de Minaur and Arthur Gea vs. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
