Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas are joining the True Detective universe, with both actors officially cast in the upcoming fifth season of the hit HBO crime anthology series.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, The Spiderman Noir star and the Spy Kids star have officially joined the cast of HBO’s True Detective anthology series, which is expected to begin filming in 2027.
Both actors had been linked to the project previously, with Cage reportedly in talks for a lead role in 2025 and rumours surrounding Banderas surfacing late last year.
Cage confirmed the role during an appearance at New York Comic Con last week: “Because you can only do so many movies back to back to act, and necessity is the mother of invention, you can connect those dots too,” he said.
The Lord of War star added, “What do I mean by necessity? Feed the family, and don’t do too many movies back to back to back. So I think I’m probably going to do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective. That’s OK that I’m the first to announce that, right?”
What to know about True Detective season 5
HBO has yet to reveal plot details for the upcoming season, but it has confirmed the characters played by the two stars.
Cage will portray Henry Logan, while Banderas will take on the role of Rai Garcia.
The fifth season of True Detective was announced by HBO in February 2024, shortly after Night Country wrapped up with impressive ratings and stronger critical reviews than the anthology’s previous two seasons.
Issa López, who served as showrunner for season four, will reprise the role while also handling writing and directing duties.
The executive-producing team includes López, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Cage, Banderas, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.
