The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) Disciplinary Council has officially handed superstar captain Cristiano Ronaldo a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine.
The ruling comes after the 41-year-old forward intentionally walked out of Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of their UEFA Nations League clash against Denmark following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus.
Backdated sanction ensures no international matches missed
Despite the severity of the disciplinary breach under article 160 of the FPF code, the financial penalty remains purely symbolic relative to Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr earnings.
Crucially for the national side, the 30-day suspension has been retroactively backdated to September 30 – the exact day Ronaldo abandoned the team base.
Because the sanction expires at the end of October, Ronaldo will not miss any international fixtures and remains eligible for selection when Portugal faces Denmark on November 14 and Wales on November 17.
Public apology and path toward reconciliation
Following the swift disciplinary review, Ronaldo publicly acknowledged his error and apologized to his teammates and supporters, expressing a clear willingness to accept the punishment while reaffirming his commitment to the national team.
FPF President Pedro Proenca confirmed the federation’s stance, noting that everyone involved desired Ronaldo’s return once the formal matter was resolved.
With 234 caps and 146 goals to his name, Portugal’s all-time record scorer now turns his focus back to club duties with Al-Nassr as the national side prepares to welcome him back into the fold next month.
