Grammy Awards 2024 was a notable night for India, where some outstanding musicians won big labels for the country.
Tabla player Zakir Hussain’s contribution to Pashto got him the ‘Best Global Music Performance’ award.
The track is an instrumental from the album As We Speak, featuring artists Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Rakesh Chaurasia.
This February 4 win is even sweeter for Hussain as he has become the first Indian musician to win three Grammys in one single night.
Rakesh, on the other hand, stood right behind him by winning two awards.
In addition to this duo, Bollywood’s beloved singer Shankar Mahadevan secured the award for ‘Best Global Music Album’ category.
It was in honor of the 2023 album, This Moment, which is composed by his fusion band Shakti that comprises of Hussain, Shankar, and English guitarist John McLaughlin.
In over 45 years of creating soulful melodies, this happens to be their very first win.
Shankar spoke on the group’s behalf, gladly thanking everyone in his acceptance speech.
He said, “Thank you boys and thank you god, family, friends and India. We are proud of you India!”
The official X profile for Grammys made an announcement for these glorious winners, including percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, who had joined hands with Shakti for This Moment.
