Bollywood has melodrama, action, and comedy. It has songs based on a kamli and a ghagra, but one thing that the industry doesn’t have enough of is rock music.
Nevertheless, it won’t be a crime to rank those few numbers, so we’re picking three of the bestest ones that the Hindi cinema has produced yet.
1. Jee Karda – Badlapur (2015)
This song is like Sadda Haq from Rockstar, but rendered into the true definition of downright energy. It has a running pulse of its own, which is why it happens to be metal heads’ favorite pick from Bollywood.
The album even included a rock version of Jee Karda with dark bass riffs, although chopping and editing vocals distorted its overall effect.
2. Aao Na – Haider (2014)
Whenever the genre of hardcore music is mentioned in India, Vishal Dadlani’s name floats up automatically.
The man is a true rock star, who has a torrent of heavy melodies written to his name. There’s Kurbaan Hua, Mar Jayian… and then there’s Aao Na.
Using ferocious lyrics penned by Gulzar, composer Vishal Bhardwaj packed it with the most powerful instrumental combination, turning the track into some kind of a ticking bomb. One listen is enough to stir a storm.
3. Dhunki – Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011)
Although it’s not a proper grunge track, this is among the industry's few rock songs that are female solos. Some other examples are Luttna, Chhil Gaye Naina, Joganiyan, and Rajj Rajj Ke.
But, among them, Dhunki works best because of its wavy set-up. Neha Bhasin’s silky vocals fused aptly with electric guitars and twangy lyrics make it go extra easy on the ears.
It’s also a great throwback to Katrina Kaif’s early romcom years.
