John Cena has said that his agency thought doing a film like Barbie was beneath him as a WWE megastar.
Sitting for a chat on The Howard Stern Show recently, he disclosed that his team had asked him not to sign the blockbuster production.
"So it's not a big team, which I'm grateful for. They're just going on what they know. And what they know is, ‘This commodity gravitates toward these things, we should stay in this lane.' But I'm not a commodity,” the star said.
As reported by People magazine, he was occupied with Fast X’s shoot, and Barbie was coincidentally being filmed in the same studio, leading him to quickly meeting Margot Robbie, who asked him to fill in for a merman role.
The producers for the movie stated that John would be done within half a day, but his agency still raised eyebrows.
He explained, "I think the perspective from an agency standpoint was 'This is beneath you,' which I get.”
"But also to the agency's credit, immediately they acquiesced, and I was like, 'No, we're going to do it,' but all they can do is offer their guidance. They're not ultimately making a choice," the actor concluded.
Cut to July 21, John not only played the character Kenmaid in Barbie, but also ended up earning claps from the audience for his magnificent makeover.
