Urmila Matondkar has revealed how she would scream in interviews that her 1999 film, Kaun?, could never become a massive hit because it wasn’t positioned that way.
In a recent interview, Hindustan Times questioned what compelled her to sign a movie like that, which gained a cult following later on, but could only perform moderately in cinemas.
To this, the celebrity responded by saying, “I was constantly screaming in my interviews that you can’t expect it to become a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai or a Judaai because it is not made with that kind of mindset, budget, or intent.”
“A producer came to me and said how could you even do a role like that?” she exclaimed
According to her, the movie was a “bunch of crazy people” choosing to team up for a production, where she was supposed to be “the craziest of all.”
At the time of signing it, Urmila was enjoying Rangeela, Satya, and song Chamma Chamma’s massive success, so agreeing to do an experimental thriller as such was a huge risk taken because it could ruin her box office record.
Another thing to consider was the fact that co-stars Manoj Bajpayee and Sushant Singh were “comparatively newcomers” in the Hindi industry, so they didn’t have “as much to lose” as the actress did.
This was because she had already built a particularly starry image with previous works, whereas Manoj and Sushant had a long way to go for earning recognition.
Written by Anurag Kashyap, Kaun? was a psychological flick produced under Ram Gopal Varma’s direction. Its plot-twist is fondly remembered and discussed by fans to date.
