Vipul Amrutlal Shah has said that Akshay Kumar’s incorrectly done on-screen appearance was largely why his 2010 SciFi romcom, Action Replayy, failed.
Taking full responsibility for the movie’s collapse, he revealed in an interview to Vaad that the Khiladi actor had even warned him beforehand.
The filmmaker admitted, “I didn’t know how to direct a period film properly. This was my fault and no one else’s. It was my failure as a director. Akshay’s look was quite messed up.”
“He even told me, ‘Vipul, you’re taking this experiment to the extreme,’ but I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ He always supports the director’s vision. I accept the blame that despite him raising concerns, I insisted on that look,” he continued.
When Akshay’s first look from the production was shared publicly, he was immediately trolled for his buck-teeth and greasy hairstyle.
According to the director, public couldn’t digest a good-looking man as him appear that bad.
It should however be noted that this sort of funny appearance was also his role’s requirement since Kishen Kumar Chopra was supposed to be an incredibly socially awkward simpleton, who improved over time.
In contrast, Aishwarya Rai had to look like an angel gliding on earth; for which, she was styled aptly.
The script, soundtrack, punchlines, cinematography, acting – everything else was right on the movie as well. This is why a very different reaction was received when Action Replayy made it to television.
“When it went on satellite, it became Akshay’s highest-rated film of that time. This happens sometimes. People get disconnected with the smallest of things,” Vipul suggested.
Another reason for the flick receiving a big blow was due to the fact that it released on the same day as Golmaal 3, which is Rohit Shetty's biggest franchise.
