Romeo and Juliet by Tom Holland is set to move to Broadway later this year.

A source revealed to The Mirror that plans for the transfer are underway, while further details remain under wraps.

The drama will play for a 12-week run at London's Duke of York's Theatre in May this year, with tickets selling out within just two hours of going on sale in February.

Fans eagerly sought tickets for the West End run, with the demand being likened to the frenzy surrounding Taylor Swift's Eras tour, which has brought in $1.04billion with 4.35m tickets sold across 60 tour dates.

Although, director of the play, Jamie Lloyd, is known for his minimalist editions of classic texts, but it's mainly Holland's leading role that has captured headlines.

However, after the announcement of Romeo and Juliet's diverse cast, production has faced a distressing wave of racial abuse.

Reacting to the backlash, the theater company issued an official statement regarding deplorable abuse and affirming their commitment to supporting and protecting their cast.

The Jamie Lloyd Company shared: "Following the announcement of our Romeo & Juliet cast, there has been a barrage of deplorable racial abuse online directed towards a member of our company. This must stop.

"We are working with a remarkable group of artists. We insist that they are free to create work without facing online harassment.

"We will continue to support and protect everyone in our company at all costs. Any abuse will not be tolerated and will be reported," Jamie Lloyd Company concluded the statement

The Romeo & Juliet cast was announced last month, with Spider-Man star Tom and Bad Education's Francesca in the titular roles.
