Richard M Sherman famous Disney films songwriter dies aged 95

Famous songwriter, Richard M Sherman, who wrote songs for Disney films like ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ has died at the age of 95.

According to CNN, Walt Disney confirmed the death of the songwriter in a statement on the website, which said Sherman passed away ‘due to age-related illness’ at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Disney referred to Sherman as “One of the most prolific composer-lyricists in the history of family entertainment and a key member of Walt Disney’s inner circle of creative talents.”

Sherman won two Oscars with his brother Robert B. Sherman in 1965 for his work on ‘Mary Poppins,’ for best original score and ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee ’ for best original song.

He also won the Grammy Award for the best original score for ‘Mary Poppins.’

In 2005, the Sherman brothers were inducted into the ‘Songwriters Hall of Fame,’ and three years later, they were awarded the National Medal of the Arts at the White House.

CEO of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, said, “Richard Sherman was the embodiment of what it means to be a Disney Legend, creating along with his brother Robert the beloved classics that have become a cherished part of the soundtrack of our lives.”

He noted, “From films like ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘The Jungle Book’ to attractions like ‘It’s a Small World,’ the music of the Sherman Brothers has captured the hearts of generations of audiences.”

Iger further added, “We are forever grateful for the mark Richard left on the world, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.”
