UAE faces one year’s rain in a day, neighbour Oman's death toll hits 18

Heavy storm in UAE flooded roads and Dubai airport, Emirate suspended flights

The United Arab Emirates faced a year's worth rain on Tuesday, April 17, unleashing immense flash flooding in Dubai and other Gulf states.

Shocking video showed the Dubai International Airport, second busiest airport in the world, underwater.

Large jets that looked more like boats moved through the flooded airport.

According to CNN, the airport confirmed in an advisory, “There is major flooding on access roads around Dubai leading to the airport. Operations continue to be significantly disrupted.”

As per weather observation at the airport, nearly 4 inches (100mm) of rain fell over the course of 12 hours, which, according to United Nations data, is the amount of rain Dubai measures in an entire year.

Moreover, as per Al Jazeera report, due to the flash flood that swept parts of the Gulf region, at least 18 people in Oman died, including 9 school children and their driver whose vehicle was washed away by flood waters in Samad A’Shan.

The National Committee for Emergency Management informed that rescue teams were still searching for two missing people.

Emirate airlines also issued a statement that says, “Emirates airlines is suspending check-in for passengers departing Dubai International airport from 8am on Wednesday until midnight dur to operational challenges caused by bad weather and road conditions.”
