Sukhwinder Singh has denied Ram Gopal Varma’s claim that the Slumdog Millionaire’s Oscar-winner song, Jai Ho, was composed by him instead of A.R. Rahman.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, he clarified, “I have only sung it. Ram Gopal Varma ji koi chhoti hasti toh nahi hain, shayad unhe kuchh galat pata chala hoga.”

Originally, the track was created for Subash Ghai’s 2008 movie, Yuvvraj, which starred Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in lead roles.

In a recent interview with Film Companion, RGV had stated that its music had been arranged by Sukhwinder, who dismissed this rumor, then suggested that maybe the confusion is because Rahman hadn’t composed the song in his own studio.

Jai Ho was made in a Juhu music cabin owned by the Dard-E-Disco’s vocalist instead, although at the time, it wasn’t recorded in his voice.

After completing all the work, Rahman took it to Subhash, but it was rejected on the basis of not being fit for Yuvvraaj.

Recalling this, Sukhwinder said, “Then he left, Rahman left. I was sad. I requested Gulzar sahab to stay back for 10-15 minutes. He asked why, to which I replied he has written it so well, let me try singing.”

“I sent it across to Rahman sahab, who in turn made it listen to Danny Boyle, director of Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman also kept his promise and gave another song to Subhash ji,” he concluded.
