A 17-year-old boy handed himself into police custody after admitting that he had attacked German politician Matthias Ecke on Friday, May 3.

According to CNN, Saxony police informed that a minor early on Sunday confessed to attacking a politician in the East German city of Dresden in the police station.

The police said that the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Germany for the upcoming European elections was attacked when putting up a campaign poster.

SDP Saxony confirmed the attack on X (previously Twitter) on Saturday, saying, “Yesterday our top candidate for the European elections, Matthias Ecke, was attacked while he was installing posters and seriously injured. Violence and intimidation of democrats are the means of fascists. The seeds sown by the AfD and other right-wing extremists are sprouting.”

The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, also condemned the attack on Ecke and wrote on social media platform X, “Attacks such as the one on MEP Matthias Ecke and other candidates threaten our democracy. We must stand together against them. I wish Matthias Ecke a speedy recovery.”

Moreover, as per NTV, 41-year-old politician Matthias Ecke had undergone emergency facial surgery after the attack.
