Microsoft is gearing up to introduce a new in-house AI language model to compete with Google and OpenAI.

As reported by Reuters, Mustafa Suleyman, a co-founder of Google DeepMind and former CEO of AI startup Inflection, is supervising the development of the new model called MAI-1.

While, the exact purpose of MAI-1 is yet to be determined, its performance will dictate its future applications.

However, there are expectations that Microsoft may unveil the new model at its Build developer conference later this month.

Despite Microsoft's decline to comment, insiders reveal that MAI-1 will surpass the company's previous smaller, open-source models in size and capability, making it a pricier endeavor.

Last month, Microsoft introduced a smaller AI model called Phi-3-mini to offer more affordable options to a wider range of customers.

Moreover, the company has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI and deployed the ChatGPT maker's technology across its suite of productivity software, allowing it to take an early lead in the generative AI race.

According to the report, Microsoft's upcoming model, MAI-1, is expected to have around 500 billion parameters, while OpenAI's GPT-4 has one trillion parameters and Phi-3 mini has 3.8 billion parameters.

Although MAI-1 isn't directly related to Inflection, it may benefit from training data collected by the startup.
