India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, expects senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to feature prominently in ODIs and Tests after retiring from T20 Internationals.

As per NDTV Sports, he hopes they maintain their fitness to be contenders for the 2027 50-over World Cup.

Following their retirement announcement post-World Cup win, Rohit and Kohli were selected for the upcoming ODIs in Sri Lanka, ahead of next year’s Champions Trophy.

In his first media address since becoming head coach, Gambhir said, "Workload management is crucial for someone like Jasprit Bumrah. For batters, if they're in good form, they should play as many games as possible."

He noted that since Rohit and Kohli are no longer playing T20s, they only need to focus on two formats, and he anticipates their availability for most matches.

However, Gambhir stressed the need for careful handling of Bumrah due to the injury risks fast bowlers face.

Gambhir also hinted at potential changes in team composition, given the T20I team’s transition following the retirements of Rohit, Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja.

However, he underscored the need for consistency in ODIs and Tests figures.

The coach also aims to foster a positive and winning environment in the team.

“Winning is the primary goal, and a happy dressing room is crucial. It's the support staff's job to ensure players stay positive and focused,” Gambhir concluded.
