Australian PM announces first major cabinet 'reshuffle' since 2022

Anthony Albanese announced a cabinet reshuffle following the retirement plans of two senior ministers

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a cabinet reshuffle on Sunday, July 28, following the retirement plans of two senior ministers.

As per Reuters, this is the first reshuffle since the Labor Party took power in May 2022, aiming to strengthen the team ahead of the next election expected in 2025.

Albanese said during a televised media conference in Canberra, noting, "I would expect that this is the team that I will take to the election when it is held sometime in the future.”

Key changes include Tony Burke, who will now oversee home affairs, immigration, multicultural affairs, and cyber security, in addition to his current role as arts minister.

Meanwhile, Clare O'Neil will move from home affairs and cyber security to housing and homelessness while staying in the cabinet, whereas Immigration Minister Andrew Giles will shift to skills and training but will no longer be in the cabinet.

Northern Territory Senator Malarndirri McCarthy will take on the role of minister for indigenous Australians.

These changes come after long-serving ministers Brendan O’Connor and Linda Burney announced their retirement plans.
