England’s top-order batter Joe Root after breaking Alastair Cook's 12,472 runs record became the leading test run-scorer of England.
According to Sky News, Root achieved a new milestone in his career on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the first match of the three test-match series against Pakistan in Multan.
Root who scored the 35th test century of his career in the match surpassed Cook’s record after he reached 71 runs.
English batter made his test debut in 2012 against India and made his first test century against New Zealand in the following year.
Moreover, England team captain Ben Stokes who did not play the first test due to injury said in a video released by England and Wales Cricket Board on X (formerly Twitter), “The selflessness that he has is an incredible attribute for him. He always puts the team first, and the fact that he’s got so many runs is just a bonus for us. He’s an incredible player.”
He further added, “It’s going to take a long, long time for someone to come in and break that record. Just a great bloke. And an unbelievable feat to score that many runs. But the non-selfishness that he possesses is one thing I think sets him above or sets him apart from anybody else who is going to play for England for a long time.”
By the end of the day England had scored 492 runs at the loss of three wickets with Harry Brook, 141, and Root 176 on the crease, trailed by 64 runs. England and Pakistan will continue fourth-day play on Thursday, October 9, 2024.
