Cher has broken silence on the challenges of parenting, including her experiences with her children Elijah Blue Allman and Chaz Bono.
During an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, the After All singer discussed her decision to file a petition for control of Elijah's finances and her relationship with her transgender son Chaz.
"You can do your best, and you can be supportive, and you can keep trying," Cher said.
She went on to say, "Elijah is so intelligent, and the truth is he’s so bright and so smart, but it hasn’t served him well, because he’s in that kind of, above all of us. He’s thinking beyond what we’re thinking – but it hasn’t helped him, really.”
Cher also opened up about her experiences with her ex-partner Gregory Allman, Elijah's father, who also struggled with addiction.
"I loved Gregory (Allman, father of Elijah Blue), so I thought, I will stick with him because he’s going to change. But they get demons, and it is what it is,” she said.
The singer further added, "With my son, I’m not going to give up on him, but it’s difficult."
Cher then spoke about her relationship with her transgender son Chaz, whom she shares with with ex-husband Sonny Bono.
"It was hard for me. It was really hard. I was so frightened,” she said.
Cher continued, "Chaz is great, a great person, we’ve gone in and out a couple of times. But we’re very close. I’m close to both of them."
Cher is currently dating Alexander Edwards.
