On June 17, 2026, Rex Heuermann, the former Manhattan architect accused of being the Gilgo Beach serial killer was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

This final judgment follows his guilty plea in April 2026 for the murders of eight women: Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla and Karen Vergata.

During the hearing, emotional families confronted Heuermann, with Jasmine Robinson stating, “A million years isn’t enough. Nothing will ever make this right.”

When prompted by Judge Timothy Mazzei to speak, Heuermann offered a brief cold apology: “I am responsible for what was said in this room today. The words I would say have no meaning and I’m going to leave it there at this time.”

The judge clearly disgusted by the defendant’s actions did not hold back his own feelings.

Calling the serial killer a “coward” Judge Mazzei remarked, “You’ve been described as a big man but you are a disgusting and small man, if you’re a man at all.”

This sentencing brings a definitive end to a haunting mystery that gripped Long Island for over a decade.
