ABC’s The Rookie is set to make an exciting return with an extended two-part Season 9 premiere, creator Alexi Hawley announced during the show’s San Diego Comic-Con 2026 panel.
The revelation comes as fans continue to react to the dramatic Season 8 finale that wrapped up with fan-favorite couple Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen being kidnapped moments after getting a whimsical proposal on the beachside, leaving fans curious about what happened next.
Season 9 premiere promises high stakes
In an interview with Comic-Con, Hawley stated the forthcoming premiere will be bigger as compared to the standard episode, teasing an emotional and electrifying return.
Hawley stated, "It's a two-parter, so it won't all be resolved in one episode. It's incredibly high stakes, dramatic. It's a love story, it's funny and unexpected."
As in previous years, The Rookie is slated to make a return in January 2027.
Melissa O'Neil apologizes to fans
Actress Melissa O'Neil, who plays Lucy Chen, acknowledged fans' emotional reaction to the shocking cliffhanger. During the panel, she jokingly apologized after seeing the audience's response.
O’Neil stated she was “in shock” to read the proposal scene in the script because “I can’t believe he’s finally giving it to them,” meaning creator-showrunner Alexi Hawley giving fans what they want with the Tim-Lucy romance. But “then the next moment” she read the kidnapping twist and was like, “see, I knew he wasn’t gonna give it to them!”
“My heart went out to everyone who was deeply invested because I was like, this is gonna be hard,” she added.
The actress further added, "Oh no! We will send you some magnesium to calm you down... We're so sorry for that, but also thank you for going along for the ride."
'The Rookie' season 9 storyline
The Rookie Season 9 will immediately pick up after the abduction scene, with Hawley confirming that Tim and Lucy will not simply wait to be rescued.
"We're definitely gonna start that way, figure out where they are and how to get them back," he previously said, adding that both characters would actively fight for their survival.
