The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged for ‘maximum restraint’ and de-escalation in the Middle East following Iran’s strike on Israel.
According to Euro News, tension sparked after Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel on Saturday, April 13.
In an emergency session of the Security Council on Sunday, April 14, the UN Secretary-General said, "We have a shared responsibility" to de-escalate tension and work for peace.
Guterres further expressed, “It's time to step back from the brink. It's vital to avoid any action that could lead to measured military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East."
He also mentioned, "Civilians are already bearing the brunt and paying the highest price. We have a shared responsibility to actively engage all parties concerned to prevent further escalation."
Secretary-General furthered, "We have a shared responsibility to work for peace. Regional, and indeed global, peace and security are being undermined by the hour. Neither the region nor the world can afford more war."
Guterres also stressed the responsibility of the international community to stop violence in the occupied West Bank and to de-escalate the situation along the Lebanon-Israel border.
