Britain’s King Charles, on Tuesday, April 30, became the new Patron of Cancer Research UK, as he continues to battle cancer himself, reported Express UK.

The monarch’s appointment to the new patronage came alongside his landmark return to the public-facing duties on Tuesday; Charles and wife, Queen Camilla, are visiting the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre in London the same day.

King Charles, whose cancer diagnosis was announced earlier this year in February by the Palace, is already patron of the Macmillan Cancer Support since 1997, and the Marie Curie Cancer Care among other cancer charities.

This comes as the monarch’s aides suggest that he is ‘determined to do his bit and spread awareness’ about the disease, as per Express UK.

Ahead of King’s visit to their cancer center, Macmillan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “As His Majesty, The King, returns to public-facing duties, we know many people with cancer will understand that choosing to return to work can be a complex decision and can mean very different things to different people.”

The King and Queen will meet Macmillan’s Chief Clinician, Professor Charlie Swanton, during their visit, and will also meet with patients receiving treatment at the center, and their families.

King Charles, from here on, is expected to make a gradual return to the public eye with more royal duties and appearances; a Buckingham Palace spokesman was quoted saying, “Doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that the King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties.”
