Selena Gomez was moved to tears when her film Emilia Pérez garnered the longest-standing ovation thus far at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.
The Spanish-language musical drama starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón, earned a nine-minute standing ovation.
In a shared snippet from the prestigious event, the Only Murders In The Building star was seen wiping away her tears as the audience clapped for a full nine minutes, along with plenty of hooting, whistling and cheering.
During the standing ovation, director Jacques Audiard lifted his hat at the balcony, as stars Saldaña and Edgar Ramírez hugged each other.
Gascón, a trans actor and rising star from Madrid, who played the role of a drug cartel leader, seeking gender-affirming surgery, also garnered a huge applause.
To note, Emilia Pérez is one of the most talked-about films and packages for sale at Cannes, alongside Ali Abbasi's Donald Trump film The Apprentice and Pamela Anderson's Last Showgirl.
The movie focuses on Saldaña, who plays the role of Rita, a lawyer who is considered to have more skills and experience but not appreciated by her firm.
Instead of seeking justice, the firm is more interested in assisting criminals. Rita finds an unusual opportunity when she is approached by Manitas (Gascón), a feared leader of a drug cartel, to help him secretly undergo a sex change operation to fulfill his desire of becoming a woman. Gomez portrays his wife, who is unaware of the situation.
