Matthew Mott steps down as England Men’s white-ball head coach

Matthew Mott led England to a T20 World Cup victory in 2022

Matthew Mott has stepped down as England Men’s white-ball head coach with immediate effect.

Mott, who was appointed in May 2022, was halfway through his four-year contract.

During his tenure, he led England to a T20 World Cup victory in 2022 but faced challenges in recent months, including England's inability to defend their T20 World Cup title and a disappointing performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

As part of the transition, assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the home summer. This includes overseeing three T20 Internationals and five ODIs against Australia scheduled for September.

Mott expressed his pride and gratitude in a statement, "It has been an honor to coach the England Men's team. I am incredibly proud of the character and passion displayed by the team, including our T20 World Cup triumph. I want to thank the players, management, ECB staff, and fans for their unwavering support," as per ESPN.

Under Mott's leadership, England also secured series wins against Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Pakistan.

However, the recent semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup, where they lost to India, seems to have been a decisive factor in his departure.

ECB managing director Rob Key acknowledged Mott’s contributions and announced that the search for a permanent replacement would begin soon.
