I.A. Rehman, Pakistani activist and journalist, dies aged 90

On Monday morning, Human rights defender and veteran journalist, Ibn Abdur Rehman also known as I.A. Rehman breathed his last at the age of 90 in Lahore.

The activist was a regular columnist for Daily Dawn and was also working as a secretary general of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).

Moreover, the Lahore-based journalist was born in 1930 in Haryana, India. He was working as a journalist since 65 years.

Rehman was very vocal about dignity, tolerance, equality and inclusion. He talked about sensitive issues in Pakistani society and he spoke about right to freedom of speech and expression at all times.

Several public figures paid tribute to Rehman on his demise, Senator Sherry Rehman tweeted, “Shocked and immeasurably saddened to hear of IA Rehman’s passing from Covid! He was an icon of integrity, standing steadfast for every single fundamental right,every single democratic value in the worst of times. Pakistan will not be the same without him. May be rest in peace.”

Raza Ahmad Rumi wrote, “Terrible news. I. A. Rehman -Pakistan's leading human rights defender, veteran journalist and public intellectual -has passed away. He was a mentor to countless rights activists, journalists & civil society leaders. It would be difficult to fill this void. #RIP Rehman Saheb!”

Bushra Gohar tweeted, “A very sad day for #HumanRights activists. #IARehman was indeed a visionary leader & a mentor.”
