South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol promised to fight for his position after the opposition-led parliament voted to impeach him for a second time.

As per Reuters, the impeachment came after he made an attempt to impose martial law, a decision that had caused widespread shock in the country.

Impeachment is the formal process in which a public official, such as a president, is formally accused of wrongdoing by a legislative body.

Yoon said, "Although I am stopping for now, the journey I have walked with the people over the past two and a half years toward the future must never come to a halt. I will never give up.”

He added, “Holding in my heart all the criticism, encouragement, and support directed at me, I will do my best for the country until the very last moment."

After today’s vote, President Yoon will be temporarily suspended from his duties.

The Constitutional Court will now have 180 days to decide whether to reinstate him or permanently remove him from the office.

If the court decides to remove him, a special election will be held within 60 days to choose a new president.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will now assume the role of acting president once official copies of the impeachment documents are given to both Yoon and the Constitutional Court.
