Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic suffers a shocking defeat to Alejandro Tabilo in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

According to BBC, the two-time winner of the Monte Carlo exited from the first round of the event on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, after a “horrible” straight-set, 6-3, 6-4, loss to a Chilean tennis player.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion, after the stunning defeat, expressed his disappointment with his performance and apologised to all the people who had to “witness this.”

The 37-year-old said, “I expected myself at least to have put in a decent performance. Not like this, it was horrible. I did not have high expectations. I knew I'm going to have a tough opponent, and I knew I'm probably going to play pretty badly. But this bad, I didn't expect.”

“I was hoping it was not going to happen, but it was quite a high probability I'm going to play this way. A horrible feeling to play this way, just sorry for all the people that have to witness this," the Paris Olympic gold medallist added.

The Serb, who was having an eye infection before the match, was seen grabbing his arm while practising in Monte Carlo. When asked about whether the eye was still an issue, he asserted that there was no injury.

After the match, when he was questioned if he had any explanation for today’s play, he replied, “I don't know. I don't have it. I have it, and I don't have it. I don't really care.”

Djokovic also revealed his goal for the 2025 season, saying that Roland Garros is all that he wants.

The French Open, which is also known as Roland-Garros, is scheduled to begin on Sunday, May 25, 2025.
