Vidhu Vinod Chopra has shared that no one believed his movie, 12th Fail, should be released in theatres.
Now celebrating 100 days of the film’s run in cinema, the director attended a gala hosted for its celebration, where he revealed how everyone wanted him to take it directly to an OTT platform instead.
Even his wife Anupama Chopra, who is a much-honored Indian critic, didn’t have faith in the production.
“She said, ‘Nobody will go see your and Vikrant's film in theatres,’ ” Chopra stated.
The filmmaker added that Anupama felt as if her husband is no longer connected with movies as in the past when he was working actively. On top of that, box office scores for 12th Fail weren’t favorable either.
Trade agencies had predicted that its opening would be of no more than 2 lakh INR whereas lifetime collections were expected to be of 30 lakh INR only.
Chopra recalled, “Everyone scared me.”
But, for him, numbers and forecasts make no sense when the intention behind the movie is considered.
“Why are you making a film?” he said, “I made an honest film, and the result is in front of everyone.”
12th Fail stars actors Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankar in the leading roles, released on October 23, 2023.
The film is based on IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma's life, and has been a massive hit since its release.
