British High Commission has reacted to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's trip to Nigeria

Harry and Meghan Markle are not representing the UK on their ongoing three-day trip to Nigeria, the British High Commissioner has confirmed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in Nigeria on Friday, May 10, after the country’s chief of defence staff, General Christopher Musa, invited them for a short tour, setting off concerns that the couple, who stepped away from royal duties in 2020, were looking to get a foot back in by embarking on what has been called a ‘quasi-royal tour’.

However, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has clarified to the News Agency of Nigeria that Harry and Meghan’s tour is a private one, and not official.

Montgomery said: “It's great that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are visiting Nigeria, which I understand is at the invitation of Defence Headquarters. But they are visiting in a private capacity, not an official one.”

“So, the British High Commission is not involved in arranging or facilitating their programme. They are not representing the work of His Majesty's Government on this visit,” he added.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle landed in Abuja on Friday, and are expected to visit Lagos after visiting the Nigerian Defence Headquarters.
